GRIEVING FOR LOSS OF DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS

OUR STRUGGLE FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE DEMOCRACY IN THE PHILIPPINES

was rendered meaningful because we started it under a spiritual atmosphere. We conducted prayer rallies inside buildings during martial law and no one could be arrested while inside churches and private halls.

I think that the United Nations must incorporate spiritual measures to make the people stronger as they face the onslaughts of anti-democratic forces.

Whenever there is a turn-around from humane to dehumanizing societies, there must be rituals. Grieving is not only a personal affair; it is also social, most especially when a whole nation is affected by the sudden turn of events that bring about anti-people acts.

 HENCE:

Every country should conduct a funeral march – to observe the death of democracy in their land – where a sitting president is not the one they voted for.

What is the value of a funeral – it says goodbye to the old and allows another to surface, a new beginning of hope, of shaping another future, more vibrant and bright, more accepting of everyone as human beings, more diligent in keeping a humane society that is observant of democratic rights.

It says goodbye to evil thoughts, evil ways, evil behavior that wrought havoc on their lives, that suppressed their emotions, and brought on fears of the present and the future.

It says farewell to evil spirits that permeate every nook and cranny of their homes, their communities and their societies

What are the tools in a funeral – candles, flowers, prayerbooks, choral choir  Candles symbolize light that should continue to flicker as the days and nights go on. Flowers emit fragrance to arouse the people's spirits to be hopeful despite the attempts to destroy their spirits. Prayerbooks are statements of pleadings to God to guide them in doing the righteous ways to dispel evil, to destroy those forces that cover their lives. The Choir is there that will sing and wail the people's fears and sorrows, and cries for justice.

At the end of the funeral, the people will kneel and pray that their lives shall assume a new meaning, a new beginning for a stronger nation that can rip apart any move to divest them of their rights, mainly their right to choose their own leaders. Then they will sing with the choir songs of joy and celebration for being alive and for clearer minds to know the right path to freedom from evil forces.

Without placing Value on our ability to grieve that which we've lost, how do we recognize the Value of that which we still have?Brenda Bartella Peterson

There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love. Washington Irving
