ON PRIORITIZING ISSUES

Events have been running very fast in our country. Arrest here, detain there, investigation all over again. Where do all these end? Happily ever after for us? Abangan.

The way we look at politics has risen in terms of activism. Our people are no longer the passive recipients of policies. But we deign ask and ask again and again -- where do our taxes go? What happened to the Malampaya funds? What has happened to the Napoles billions? Many people say we can even go decades back and check so that we will see how those who led us in power were able to amass so much wealth that they have retired in foreign countries, or frequent those places without qualms about the expenses they will incur.

For us who have been left behind, we can only grit our teeth and say, "Makakarma rin kayo." "God does not sleep." "When God closes one window s/he opens another." "The sun never sets."

What can save PNoy from an ignominious ending of his term is if he is able to make food really, really very cheap. But as it is, the prices just go up and up. Just today, I found out that my favorite Chinese restaurant will be raising their prices by September 9. What will I do, binge until September 8? Ha ha. That's a joke.

In fact, when I eat the noodles that I order, I mix in kamote leaves to augment the greens and make it truly healthy for me. By the way, Folks, did you know that eating vegetables should be a daily habit? If you eat every other day, you will experience lower energy during those days that you don't. And greens like kamote leaves, okra, and broccoli are really good. Unfortunately, the latter is quite expensive. One bundle of 3 costs P150 already.

Anyway, is it not ironic, that we are in an agricultural country, and yet vegetables are really expensive? I had an idea before.  Why not make the National Food Authority provide free transport of veggies from Benguet to MetroManila? Then along the way, pick up the fishes from Lingayen, and fresh carabao milk from Bulacan. That would really bring Healthy foods. PNoy will retire with the people having red cheeks and least sickly bodies.

We can dream can't we?

Now I was really wondering why the Department of Environment has a very low budget for 2014. Look Folks, how much does it cost to make the atmosphere of MetroManila clean? If you go up to Antipolo, you will see black, not gray, but BLACK clouds hovering over it. And that means you and I who are in Quezon City, or Manila, or Makati, Pasig, etcetera are inhaling those pollutants everyday. So the DENR should rethink its budget. Divide by square miles how much it would cost to clean the air.

Actually, I have thought of banning jeepneys with diesel from entering the cities. There are already E-jeepneys but you can count them on your fingers. The DENR and the Department of Energy should provide loans to jeepney drivers cooperatives and operators to be able to buy those E-jeepneys, that is, if the DENR and the DOE are really serious about their jobs.

Maybe they do not inhale the pollution because they travel around in air-conditioned vehicles, hey guys, courtesy of our taxes. So, then they do not know what we experience every day and every minute.

I notice now  my health is being assaulted by these pollutants every minute and I live in a subdivision that has trees and no traffic, save the noisy motorcycles and tricycles seemingly commanded to pass by our house at highest speeds always.

So I would like to call on all environmental groups to watch the budget of the DENR especially in order to be able to focus on what is most important at this time: the cleanliness of the atmosphere so that we will be able live as human beings, inhaling oxygen not carbon monoxide.

Truly, our politics is full of loopholes and our people are just reeling from them aside from the skyrocketing prices of goods. But then let us keep our heads together and learn to prioritize what issues need to be prioritized.
